One thing I really hate to see at formal events (think weddings, proms, fraternity formal, charity galas, etc.) is a woman in a beautiful cocktail dress carrying...her everyday bag.
To be honest, you shouldn't even bother with the dress if you're going to ruin it by carrying your beaten-up black bag that earlier was carrying your gym sneakers.
It's not that hard to make a small investment in a cocktail appropriate purse to carry your ID, some money and your cell phone. That's all you need on a fancy night anyway, right??? Leave your world at home!

I agree, except that even for a dressy occasion, I like to have a purse that I can wear on my shoulder or even across my chest (it's important to be able to wear it securely when you're worried about purse-snatching on the street). I like the price and the key ring, but it needs an "add a shoulder strap" option to be perfect.
