Back to Basics

The plain white tee! (Isn't that a band?)

Well, it's also something you, and every single person in America, should have in their closet. I'm not talking about a white hanes undershirt you've worn for years. I'm talking about a crisp, clean, form fitting white t-shirt. Tuck it into a high waisted skirt. Wear it with a pair of skinny jeans and pink heels. Put a cardigan over it with black pants and wear it to work. There is nothing more valuable than a nice white t-shirt.

Price: $4.50. You could buy three of them and a venti gingerbread latte and still be under $20!

  1. What do you think about quality of Forever 21 stuff? It seems sort of H&M-ish and my mentor did not advise H&M quality for work except maybe on Fridays.

  2. It really depends on the item. Dresses, skirts and pants from Forever21 are generally made of fabrics that are not of a quality acceptable for work. However, this is a cotton shirt. My view on this is that a cotton shirt is a cotton shirt is a cotton shirt. You could pay $4.50 for a cotton shirt in Forever21, or overpay elsewhere. Also, the slight detailing on this shirt differentiates it from, say, a plain old white round neck t-shirt at American Apparel.

Also, I think it's different for men and women. Men can't wear a round neck white t-shirt under a cardigan or a suit to work, but generally a woman can. Women can make the shirt dressy by using lots of accessories, and that's something men can't do and, thus, is precisely why they need the collar.
