Read My Lips!

Now that we've covered how to appropriately draw attention to your eyes, it's time to focus on another feature - perfectly pouty lips.

I've talked about my favorite "everyday" lipstick, but if you really want to draw attention to your lips and make them the focal point of your look, you need something with a little more punch. My favorite? Red. That's right - red lipstick. Don't shy away from it. I hear so many women claim that they can't wear red, or it's too drastic or this excuse or that excuse.

Hogwash!

Red is for everyone. However, the exact shade of red depends on your coloring. Are you fair skinned? Yellow undertones or pink? Olive? Darker? There are so many different shades of red, and it's for this very reason - so that you can find at least ONE shade that will work with your complexion.

Don't be intimidated by all of the options. Instead, head to your nearest department store or beauty boutique (i.e. Ulta, Sephora, etc.). Spend some time trying out different shades and see what works best on you. Once you've found your perfect shade, it's also a good idea to purchase a matching lipliner, as red lipsticks tend to bleed a bit more if you don't line your lips.

My shade happens to be Nars' Cruella - I prefer it in the lip pencil form. It has a slight orange base, which balances out my undertones and, for some reason, the color seems to stay on my lips longer than normal red lipsticks. The result? My perfect red lipstick - perfect for a night out.

There you have it - an easy way to make your lips stand out and look delightfully nibble-worthy. Pucker up!

I love geometric dresses. The dresses made out of colorful patterns composed of straight lines and geometric shapes. It doesn't get boring, and yet it's not overwhelming to the eye.

The dress drapes in the back, which you wouldn't expect it to considering the tighter front. I think this is one of the details that makes the dress, because who would want to be predictable anyway?

I bought this skirt last weekend, and I heart the soft material and the feminine details that make it a winner.

I will admit that sometimes I put mostly flashy and revealing black dresses up here. I like to balance that out every once in a while with a a dress that is a bit more covered up, but still every bit as stylish and sexy as every other black dress featured on this blog.

The ruffle gives a sleeve effect without actually providing a whole sleeve. This guarantees that the fattest part of your arm will look tiny!

DEAL OF THE DAY: Contest Winner!

First of all, I want to congratulate those who submitted black mini skirts for the contest! Every single one of the submissions was a stylish black skirt that I would buy in a heartbeat! This made choosing a winner difficult.

Also, a very special THANK YOU to Tulip Gifts for donating the prize for today's winner! The jewelry prize is featured above.

Coming in third place is Stacy Tillett, with this submission.

You can't go wrong with denim. It's versatility is great, and of course I love anything Paige premium, so I'm in love with this skirt. Since I have an addiction to denim skirts, I'm sure this will be in my bluefly cart in no time :p

Coming in second place is Mellie Russo with this submission.

This skirt captures everything going on stylewise right now. Ruffles? Yes. Chiffon? Of course! And it's all available for under $20? You betcha!

Our first place winner, and winner of the contest is....Jenni White, for this submission.

First off, the skirt is only $32.99, down from it's original price tag of $108.00. Second, I love the asymetrical wrap effect and the hem embellishment. The slight flashiness of the skirt allows it to be the star, and that's tough for a black mini skirt, which is usually the ensemble base (not always an exciting place to be!) Third, it's by BCBG Generation, a strong label that is coming out with some really great stuff right now.

Congrats to Jenni! And thank you to everyone who participated! Look back for the next Deal Of The Day Contest Next Tuesday!

Ulterior Party Dress Motives

The hardest parties to dress up for are the ones where people are going to dress up but pretend like they didn't care about dressing up and weren't actually trying.

WHAT A MIND GAME!

What girl doesn't obsess about her outfit before going to a party? I know I do! A true fashionista assesses what style is appropriate for where she is going and dresses accordingly. Maybe a dive bar or a giant hipster house party isn't the time for your new black BCBG dress (you see what I am saying????)

Just because you can't be too dressed up doesn't mean you can't be fiercely stylish! For those occasions, i recommend a shirt like the one featured above. It's a muted color so you're not standing out or anything, but the silk panels add that slight differentiation to the shirt that brings it from "blah" to "bam!" This shirt also looks like it will hug in the right places, as oppose to a crappy used t-shirt, which often just...hangs.

FASHION FAQ: The Change Of Seasons

Dear Fashion Deal Diva
,

I bought one of the dresses you recommended (yay!) I love it and I want to wear it tonight, but I am worried it might be a bit too"spring-y" for February. What do you think?

- Color Me Weather Appropriate

Dear Color Me Weather Appropriate,

I know you love the dress, and I'm sorry to say this, but...it is too early to wear this dress.

Why? Well...here is where my answer gets a bit....murky.

Look at the dress. It FEELS springy, doesn't it? Even though there is that dark blue, and even the black belt, there is a lot of white space on the dress, and that yellow is awful bright for winter fare. Chances are, if you feel like it's not yet the time to wear a particular outfit, then it's not time to wear this particular outfit. The most problems are caused with this between February and May. By June it's summer no problem. What color can you wear to a spring wedding? What about Easter/Passover dresses?

I will not lie to you and say this is easy. My general rule is clothing that has fewer spring elements, like this dress, can be worn once the calendar says March 1st. As for everything else, it's going to be totally weather dependent. Use common sense! Would you wear a pink pastel dress on a 55 degree April day? Would you wear a wool sweater on a 75 degree March morning? Probably not.

So keep those fashion thinking caps handy ladies! (And make sure they are in season, too).

Elastics

Forever21 calls this a "Hydrangea Elastic."

Let's call it what it REALLY is.... A SCRUNCHIE!

I know, a dirty word, an accessory that strikes fear in the heart of every fashionista. It's a time none of us want to go back to...wearing six different scrunchies, a neon rainbow, all while sporting a side ponytail...what on earth were we thinking?!?! (Ok I was six at the time but still, I was copying icons who were older!)

This "elastic" is ok in my book because it's not REALLY a scrunchie. You just have to be careful how you wear it. Don't put it on a straight-up pony tail. Instead, wear it around a bun. Or make a loose side ponytail that hangs on your shoulder. Or make two small braids on the side of your head and connect them with the elastic.

Let's bring the scrunchie into 2010, styled! Chic! Updated!!!

All Belts Are Not Created Equal.

Let's say you are going out for a dinner at a nice Italian restaurant and then out to a rooftop bar. Should you wear the same old plain black leather belt you wear every day? Absolutely not! For those occasions, you should have a "fancy" belt.

BUDGET BELLE: Bright Eyes

If you're like me, you don't get enough sleep - or at least you don't look like you're getting enough sleep. Dark circles and dull eyes are nobody's friend. However, this problem can be easily fixed with a 30-second make-up trick.

You read that correctly - I'm talking about a serious time-saver, people. And the absolute best part? All you need is one simple tool.

Meet your new best friend - a nude-colored eye or concealer pencil! You can find this at your local drugstore or your nearest beauty supply store.

I like Make Up For Ever's concealer pencil ($18 at Sephora). Just line the inside lower lid of your eyes with the nude-colored pencil - it's as simple as that. This makes your eyes look brighter and more alert - giving you the effect of having a full night's sleep. But really, when's the last time that happened?

FASHION FAQ: Textured Tights

Dear Fashion Deal Diva,

Last week you talked about wearing bright colored tights. I want to know how to wear textured and patterned tights. I love wearing skirts with boots but I have no idea what to wear on top when I have crazy tights on the bottom.

- Lost In The Pattern

Dear Lost In The Pattern,

The big difference between how to wear a colored tight and how to wear a textured tight is that with a colored tight, you want to downplay its role in your outfit, whereas with a textured tight, you need to make it the star. Why is this so? Well, let me put it in terms of the cast of a Broadway show.

A colored tight is like a featured chorus dancer. She's maybe not the best singer or actress, but when you put her around a bunch of equally talented performers, their strength comes from their work as a group. However, a textured tight is like Liza Minelli. You can't put Liza Minelli in the chorus! She'll overpower everybody. Once you know she's involved, you need to plan the show around her. Everyone should be doing everything to make Liza look better.

Moving forward with this analogy, textured tights are Liza Minelli. You must pair the textured tights with things to make them look better and make them the star. If you have a black textured tight with a crazy pattern (diamonds, lace, flowers, etc.), it should be paired with all black, end of sentence. It cannot, and should not, battle with any sort of color. So it's up to you to put that textured tight with a black mini dress and some killer black pumps or knee high boots.

Also, this should go without saying, but if your figure is a bit fuller than the average lady, then you MUST avoid any sort of textured tight with a stripe. It will only make your legs look bad. You know your body, and the most important part of style is dressing that body accordingly!

What about a colored textured tight? Well...here, you have to follow the rules for colored AND textured tights. You generally should stay away from clothes that have a lot of detailing. My favorite textured tights are a pair of mustard colored lace flower tights from Urban Outfitters. I wear them with a mustard colored velvet mini skirt from Steven Alan, a sheer ivory long-sleeved blouse, pearls, and brown knee high boots. In this way, you are not seeing too much of the tight, so we are following the color rules, but the tights are still the star (nothing else in the outfit is overly exciting or jazzy so the tights are front and center!)

If any of you ever have questions about textured tights, feel free to send me photos of the tights and a potential outfit, and I will provide advice, free of charge!

XO!

The Perfect Spring Dress

I think the best spring dresses are the ones that employ light and airy summer elements with dark colors. This dress is a perfect example of that technique. White lace and a white bodice in stark contrast to the navy a-line bottom.

FASHION FAQ: It's Electric!

Dear Budget Belle,
How do I get my hair to not be full of static cling in the winter?

- Shocking Beauty

Dear Shocking Beauty,

Great question! Static electricity tends to be more of a problem during the winter months because the air is very dry. Couple that with the fact that most of us wear hats to keep us warm, and you've got a big static-y/frizzy problem. Fear not! There are a few ways you can avoid this winter hair Don't.

First, invest in a good ionic hair dryer. A quality hair dryer can be used all year-round and will last you for many years to come, so I recommend spending a decent amount of money on one. The ionic hair dryers, in particular, work to close the cuticle layer so that your hair dries flat - translation: silky, smooth hair. I have the T3 dryer, which is definitely pricey but WELL worth the investment. (More info about that in a future post.)

Second, don't be afraid to use product to smooth our your hair and protect it from frizz. I personally like the "Living Proof" line of "no-frizz" products. Just comb a dollop of the straightening cream through your hair while it's still damp, then blow-dry as usual. The result is smooth, frizz-free hair. The Living Proof products are sold at Sephora, but you can probably find a product at your local drugstore that will work as well. Look for something that includes "silicone" on the ingredient list.

Last, keep some pomade on hand for touch-ups and fly-aways. A little dab is all you need to smooth any frizz that Old Man Winter has created. Take a small amount, rub it between your hands to warm it up a bit, then apply as needed.

There you go - basic steps to keep your hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free! Now bundle up, it's cold out there!

XO, The Budget Belle
