SPORTY SPECIAL: Under The Sea

Thanksgiving looms near, dear fashionistas; if you’re anything like me, this means it’s time to make those winter escape dreams a booked reality. I’m eyeing a week in Costa Rica personally, but wherever in the southern hemisphere your fashionably fabulous self is planning to relive the summer for another week or two, you best be prepared.

No one looks good in rental dive gear. I repeat: NO ONE looks good in rental dive gear. Your last name might be Klum or Crawford, but you still look like a silicone-faced platypus in the one-size-fits-none snorkeling mask that nice cabana boy hands you. But you don’t have to; not if you byos&m (snorkel and mask).

Here’s a snorkel and mask combo from Body Glove designed for a woman, in a flattering color, with a flattering (well, as flattering as a silicone platypus snorkel mask can get) two-window design. It’s a dry snorkel, meaning waves of water washing over you won’t flow down the snorkel and asphyxiate you (because asphyxiation is never attractive). Better yet: if you have a bestie heading somewhere tropic this winter to get her groove back, this might make a perfect bon voyage holiday gift. Perhaps she’ll even bring you back that cabana boy to return your act of kindness :).

SPORTY SPECIAL: Chic-ram Yoga

I’ll admit that the only Yogi I know is a cartoon bear. That said, I’m sure there are some fashionistas out there that are more in touch with their inner-Om than moi, so this one goes out to all you bendy beauties. The Tree of Life Yoga Mat tote gives you a chic, office-appropriate mode by which to transport the tool of your triangle pose trade. I’m smitten with the delicate tree detail set off against the clean white exterior. The complete nylon lining will keep your hot yoga funk out of the crisp cotton. And don’t forget to rehydrate after your bikram sweat session: EarthLust’s stainless steel water bottles have adorable designs applied with non-toxic paints and BPA-free safe polypropylene toppers. The Cranes on Teal and the Dragonfly on Mustard versions are hot regardless of your yoga.

SPORTY SPECIAL: Buy me [The North Face] and Crackerjack….

Oh fashionistas, the air’s a bit crisper, the seasonal pumpkin spice latte flavors are on tap, and the Giants are in the World Series. All signs of the start of a glorious fall. Pull those scarves out of storage and find your next fireside novel; while you’re at it, nab one of these oh-so-toasty Denali jackets by North Face. This ubiquitous Polartec fleece remains a bestseller year after year for a reason: it’s a perfect combination of form and function. Stylish and warm, the Denali is ideal for both brisk morning hikes and mid-day financial district caffeine runs. Due to its popularity and quality, the Denali is rarely on sale. However, these discontinued colors (I’m hearting the Aurora Pink Heather) are currently being offered at half-off retail. That’s a homerun in anyone’s book.

SPORTY SPECIAL: Late Summer's Eve

You've biked, you've canoed, you've leaped over tall buildings in a single bound. You've had a rough day. Now it's time to kick back by the campfire (which you've also prepared) and rejuvenate before you start all over again tomorrow. Enter the Morning Glory dress. This dress screams "yeah, I tackled a 5.8 climb this morning, but this evening it's all about me and my pale ale and the summer's night." The dirty day gear peels off, and the flirty night attire slips on. The jersey knit resists wrinkle factor, and the back tie means you can adjust the fit of the empire waist to suit your figure perfectly. This dress was born to accompany you on travels both short and long. I'm a fan of the Northern Light Blue.

SPORTY SPECIAL: A Lil' Support

I'm not the most chest-blessed gal, but I still need a little top support when pulling a downward dog. I have mixed feelings towards sports bras. Strike that: nine times out of ten, I absolutely hate them. Most sports bras are the equivalent of S&M bondage devices; They smoosh and smash and mash and duct tape it all in, constricting my breathing and cutting into my back and shoulders. After years of holding out for "the one," and almost losing hope, I found my match made in undergarment heaven in the unlikeliest of places: Gap.

The Racerback bra by Gap and I have lived in sporty bliss ever since. This bra is not for everyone--I imagine many girls out there need more support than this bra can provide. But if you're on the smallish side like me, and you hate feeling like your sports bra is trying to break your ribs, I can't recommend it highly enough. The racerback stye means the straps hide prefectly behind any racerback tanks. This bra is both seamless and wireless, and the stretch nylon blend provides me the perfect amount of support to keep it under wraps when running or jumping.

At $20 a pop, you can score two of these bras (in white, black, or nude) for the price of one traditional bondage/torture device...I mean...sports bra.

SPORTY SPECIAL: Mama Said Knock You Out (And Be A Knockout)

I'm in a boxing boot camp, so you lovelies get a window into my world this week. First off, I love boxing in the mornings. If you have a stressful job that gets you miffed from time to time, trust me on this one: 90 minutes of punching stuff every morning is a great way to get it out of your system in the gym rather than in the office. Some people find pilates calming, but I personally reach my moment of zen after unleashing a can of whoop ass.

I've spied with my little eye these potent yet purdy punchers by Everlast. They provide ample wrist protection and a decent amount of padding (if you have delicate digits, they're available in a 14 oz size with even more padding). And yes, you can throw a mean uppercut while sporting a sweet pink.

SPORTY SPECIAL: Winter Preparedness

Happy September, Fashionistas!

While you are holding on to those precious remnants of summer, September is the transition month before the candy corn flows into stuffed turkeys, bringing on yuletide carols. Okay, okay, you're thinking Ms. Sporty is getting ahead of herself. BUT, as all diligent holiday shoppers know, if you're not ahead, you'll find yourself behind...a line of 400 other holiday season procrastinators willing to shell out top-dollar for the latest and greatest toys. So I say to you, dear fashionistas, get thee to a ski and snowboard shop, and stat! If you act before every other ski bunny and their frost-loving followers can say "Starbucks holiday cup," you can score a 2010 board or pair of skis at a ridiculously low, decidedly non-holiday-season price.

Take, for instance, Sierra/Burton's mid season release of the Sierra V Spot: a soft and flexible board perfect for novices as well as those looking to put a few tricks in their bags this season. The product description says it best: "The first women's specific snowboard in the Sierra lineup is hotter than finding a pair of Manolo Blahnik Heels in your size on a clearance rack."

The Sierra V Spot can be yours for $250 (50% off retail price). Try finding a pair of Manolos at that price...

SPORTY SPECIAL: Derby Days

In the joys of internet procrastination, I noticed the annual tryouts for the Bay Area Derby Girls were held last week. Being a fan of aggressive (okay, downright violent) sports, and having a been a roller hockey instructor myself back in the day, and having recently seen the movie “Whip It” with the amazing Ellen Page, this bit of news got my wheels spinning (intentional pun) about potentially trying out next season. Well, in order to do that, I’ll need to have the proper goods, right?

The website for the San Francisco roller derby team (the “ShEvil Dead”) refers potential budding derby girls to the Cruz Skate Shop, where rookies and veterans alike can get their speed skates and protective gear on. There’s even an option to build your own skates, should you fancy the hot pink wheels and top o’ the line boots for shredding and clocking. Cruz Skate Shop also offers a very reasonably priced rookie package, including everything a bruiser needs to get in the rink and dominate. For $179.99, the rookie set includes either GT-50 or Reidell R3 old-school speed skates, a Pro tec Classic helmet, Pro tec street knee pads, Pro tec street elbow pads, Pro tec wrist guards, a moldable mouth guard and a mini skate tool. For $30 more, you’ll get a sturdy Riedell Backpack to lug around all your new bad-a$$ery gear in.

You'll have everything you need to be a derby darlin'!

SPORTY SPECIAL: Serious(ly) Cute Swimwear

Hi Fashionistas!

It may be freezing here in SF, but I’ve heard reports of record heat sweeping most of the country this summer. Temperatures are rising and your running shoes are melting; it’s the perfect time of year to throw yourself into a cool body of water. When it comes to pool and beach attire, the options are endless, and your choice will be informed by whatever activities you plan to do in said body of water. Float in a tube while sipping that Mojito? Sure, your crochet string bikini will keep you company. Swim across a bay, or join a Masters swim team? Perhaps not crochet-bikini’s forte.

I love bikinis when I’m frolicking with friends, tossing a Frisbee on the beach, and working on my “tan” (or more likely my burn – remember you waterproof sunscreen). But when it comes to swim workouts, I don’t want to fear out-swimming my swimsuit. I tend to go with a one-piece for lap swimming, but a one-piece does not have to look like a high school swim team yearbook photo.

Take this Nike one-piece, for example. First, I love that it’s not black or pale blue, which seem to be the uniform colors of “I’m a fitness swimmer” attire. The fuchsia will work splendidly with many different skin tones. Next, I love the stitch detailing around the waist and chest. This swimsuit looks tailored, and the lines are clean and add something interesting to what can easily be a very boring suit. When I saw this swimsuit, I imagined throwing on a pair of slacks and a blazer with the torso of the swimsuit functioning as a shirt. I don’t recommend you replace your work blouses with a swimsuit, but you get my point…this is not your everyday lap suit.

This swimsuit walks that frequently fine line between aqua play and aqua sport. It says “I’m a serious swimmer…a cute and fashionable serious swimmer.” And it will also happily keep you company in a tube with a Mojito, if that’s more your idea of “fitness” swimming :)

Stay cool out there!

SPORTY SPECIAL: Give It A Tri

II’m doing a half-Ironman this weekend, so you get a triathlon-specific post this week. If you’ve been curious to try a tri, I urge you to ignore any self-doubt and take the plunge! Triathlons (and triathletes) come in all sizes: there are race age groups accommodating 14 year olds as well as 70 year olds. A good newbie race distance is a sprint triathlon, which involves roughly a half-mile swim, a 12.5 mile bike, and a 3 mile run. That doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Registering for a tri provides great motivation to keep up with workouts, and the multisport aspect means your training wont be boring because you’ll constantly be shifting between disciplines. There’s a great sense of accomplishment at that finish line, and I’ve found that tri-peeps are some of the most fun, motivated, optimistic and supportive people you’ll ever meet.

When it comes to being “pretty” on race day, I admit it’s a tall order. You drag yourself through a lake or river, dance an awkward jig to pry your wetsuit from your body, and hop on your bicycle while still dripping like a lake monster. Transitions can be quick and dirty, and require a game plan. A big piece of that game plan is what you’ll be wearing during the race.

Enter the trisuit: a thin spandex unitard with some cushion in the derriere for your time on the bike saddle. The cut of a trisuit might remind you of the bathing suit your grammy wore to the pool back in her hey days when your gramps worked up the nerve to ask her out for a milkshake. That may not be a sexy mental image, but the trisuit gets the job done: I wear it under my wetsuit, on my bike, and when I cross that finish line after the run. However, finding a trisuit that won’t make you cringe when you see your race day pics can be a formidable challenge.

I recently stumbled across this DeSoto Women’s-cut trisuit at Sports Basement. It will be mine; oh yes, it will be mine. This suit caters to an hourglass figure, rather than sausage-ing all your lady curves into a suit cut for a prepubescent boy. I love the accent detailing, and apparently the stitched-in bicycle padding wont add significant junk to your fashionable trunk. But don’t get me wrong; this is a serious suit, ready to be taken to the triathlon task.

Tri it…you’ll like it! :)

SPORTY SPECIAL: Beating Up The (Aqua) Beat!

Hola Fashionistas!

On Saturday mornings following wine-filled Friday eves, or on weeknights after a rough day at the office, I find very little to be more calming and refreshing than swimming laps in my gym’s outdoor pool. Swimming is a wonderful workout that strengthens and elongates nearly every muscle in the body with zero impact to your already stressed-out joints. My only issue with swimming, especially when in a pool rather than in open water, is that lap after lap after lap of staring at the black line on the pool’s floor can get a little monotonous.

Enter the “SwiM”P3. You heard that right; a waterproof MP3 player! I bought my first one a year and a half ago, when they were just coming to the market. Swimmers in the lanes next to mine would first give me a concerned “please don’t electrocute us all” look, and then, once assured of their safety, would follow up with “where did you get that wonderful device?!”

I am now on my second waterproof player, and am a full-fledged addict—two hours in the pool fly by when Jay-Z and Kenny Chesney are rockin’ me through every stroke. (Yes, I have “diverse” musical tastes.) My current device is the Speedo Aquabeat Waterproof MP3 player. It stores an impressive 250 MP3 files or 500 WMA files. One charge (via a cable to my laptop) usually lasts me a good three our four long swim sessions, and the device itself is quite small and affixes to the back of my goggle strap. There are basic player functions such as skipping forward or backward a song, and adjusting volume. The device also comes with a pair of decent waterproof headphones.

And now, Amazon.com is offering my beloved underwater rock-out device in pink for a mere $64.51. I have the black version…but I wish it was pink.

Now you too can butterfly to AFI and backstroke to BackStreet! (I can’t resist good deals and bad puns.)

SPORTY SPECIAL: Pack It Up

Welcome to Thursday, fashionistas!

Did you wake up this morning and say to yourself, gee, I’d really like to do the Appalachian trail next month? Or perhaps trek in Yosemite for a week? Or even compete in an adventure race?

Well, first off, I want in! And second, here’s an awesome deal on a pack to stow your sleeping bag and all that bug repellant: a 37-Liter Gregory Arreba women’s technical pack.

This baby features stretch nylon “impregnated” with silicone so it won’t tear under pressure, has capacity for two large water reservoirs and hydration ports so you can get your H2O on, sports front and side mesh pockets to carry the wet clothes you waded through that river in (you will be wading through a river, won’t you?), and even dual ice axe loops, should an ice wall appear on that spur of the moment vacay of yours (always be prepared!).

To top it off, I find the lime green color just plain sexy. Even hotter? The markdown from $149 to $49.93. REI loves you and wants you to be happy :).

SPORTY SPECIAL: If The Shoe Fits

Happy Wednesday, fashionistas!

This week’s Sporty Special focuses on one of the most important purchases an athlete makes: running shoes. Before I continue, let me preface this post with the strong recommendation that any running shoe purchase be preceded by a trip to a trusted running footwear establishment (i.e., not necessarily the Foot Locker in your local mall).

In the Bay Area we have Road Runner Sports and MetroSport, among others. In LA, I’ve had good experiences at a shop called Phidippides. Find a place that comes recommended, go in, have your feet accurately measured and your arches examined, let an experienced employee watch your gait and stride as you run around outside the shop, try on multiple (at least four) pairs of shoes, actually run in them prior to purchase. So many running injuries start with old or poor-fitting footwear, and it’s safe to say there’s nothing stylish about hobbling around for months in orthotics.

That said, I will now pronounce my undying love for Saucony. I’m not sure why it is, but no other running shoe I try on feels so right. It was love at first sprint. I actually feel faster in Saucony shoes. My current Saucony flavor is the Progrid Omni. I’m a moderate pronator, have medium/low arches, and need some stability but hate the feeling of traditional stability shoes (you know, like those clunkers your mother Sweated to the Oldies in). The Progrid air chambers in the heel give extra impact cushion and bring spring to each step.

At Sports Basement, you can score the loves of my pavement-pounding life for $78.00 (down from $110.00).

P.S.: if you’re a light to moderate runner, change out your running shoes every six months. Even if they’re just hanging out on your shoe rack, the cushioning becomes, well, less cushiony regardless of use. If you’re racing around the city on a daily basis, rotate in a new pair every three months or so.

Being street smart starts with your feet! :)

SPORTY SPECIAL: Get Your Lululemon On

Happy Friday, fashionistas! I don’t know about you all, but I’m a morning workout person. I like the feeling of having an eight-mile run under my feet before my clock hits 8:00 a.m. In San Francisco, this often necessitates dressing in layers. And when it comes to layers, I have one word for you: Lululemon.

Lululemon is a fitness apparel company with a cult-like following in San Francisco. If the San Francisco Marina invited you to a Saturday morning party, the invitation’s dress code would specify “Lululemon. And maybe a yoga mat.” There’s something about Lululemon’s tanks, tops, jackets, pants, and capris that say you’re ready to go to hot yoga, then a Bellini brunch with the girls, then hiking in Marin, then grocery shopping, and then to a movie…all in the same outfit. It’s weekend warrior wear.

Lululemon can also be a bit pricey; they know they have women hooked on their spandexy drugs. So when I see a cute Lululemon on sale, I pounce like a Cheetah with a hunger for designer Lycra!

This Lululemon warm up jacket is perfect for that early morning jog in the fog, or the walk to and from your gym. It’s form-fitting yet forgiving, made of a light, wicking material, sports a mesh back for breathability and a hidden pocket in which to stash your keys and post-sweat snack money, and my favorite part: the thumbholes in the arm openings mean your hands stay toasty (not to mention that it’s just plain cute). I’m partial to the pink, but it also comes in baby blue, grey and black.

So go ahead fashionistas: get your Lululemon on!

SPORTY SPECIAL: Biking In Style

Hey there fashionistas,

My name is Stacy, and I’ll be representing the sporty spice of this blog. I work and live (and run, bike, and swim) in the Pacific Coast playground that is San Francisco. While I’ve been known to get a little muddy and sweaty, I do it in style, and I want to share that sporty style with all you lovely readers.

My first post is for the biker chicks (think pedals, not roadside bar). Picking out cycling equipment can be a daunting task—spandex and shades, carbon fiber and clipless pedals, oh my!

Well, this week I stumbled across a cycling novelty: peep toe pumps…for cycling. That’s right, Pumps. On bikes! And not of the filling-your-tires variety! It’s a whole lot of awesome.
These Camper pumps are a gorgeous mustard hue that will make you look quirky and carefree as you pedal your way to your favorite park on a balmy summer Sunday. They’re of a durable knobby leather that will better hide marks than smooth leather, and the solid heel and wide base of the pump make for excellent pedal-to-shoe contact. They’re also made by Camper—which gives you instant Bay Area cred.

I found these lovelies on the website of a new cycling company brought to you by the same people who started Design Within Reach. The website, www.publicbikes.com, is chock-full of quirky and gorgeous cycling accoutrement, a fair deal of which is both stylish and affordable (the bikes themselves are stylish, yes, but require a more serious financial investment). $5 matching mustard bungee straps for your bike rack? $12 brass or red brass bike bells? $40 blonde woven-wood bike basket? Yes, please!

Cycle in style and with a smile.
